Election Year Perspective: One Nation Under God

Election Year Perspective: One Nation Under God
By Kimberly Sowell

Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret—it only causes harm. Psalm 37:7-8

In this season of elections, the gravity of our nation's decisions can feel like a heavy burden to all of us. News reports remind us daily that our leaders in authority over us make decisions that affect our personal lives and the canvas of our society. As the salt and light of America, we as followers of Christ have the opportunity to make a strong statement to our fellow citizens as we approach these elections with grace: in God we trust. We can reject the temptation to get angry with the media, frustrated with campaigners, irritated with pollsters, and exasperated with voters who don't see eye to eye with us on the issues. The Psalmist reminds us that fretting only causes harm – to our health, to our focus, and to our witness to the world who is watching us carefully. So what can we do?

* Pray for our leaders. The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will
(Prov. 21:1).

* Pray for the people of our nation. In this great nation, many Americans are hurting, lonely, and confused, but most of all, they need a Savior.

* Be positive about God's sovereignty. God is at the helm of our lives. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God (Psalm 20:7).

* Affect change in your corner of the world. Do you want your community to be changed? Start telling your neighbors about Jesus Christ! Model God's love through your acts of kindness. Raise a generation of Christ-followers in your home.

There is a great debate in our society over the quote: “You can't legislate morality." We would love for our laws to reflect what God calls sin, but our hope is not in laws or in lawmakers – it is in God. Consider this great truth: the Holy Spirit can transform us into “One Nation Under God" regardless of the laws on our books, the legislators on our bench, or the leaders on the senate floor. As our friends and neighbors in this great nation turn their lives over to Christ, it is then that we become a nation under God, and it will be God's law written on our hearts that will legislate our morality under the Holy Spirit's leadership as we seek to live as Christ.
Study the issues, get involved in the process, and make an informed decision in the voter's booth, then join the battle to turn our nation to God by reaching out with the message of Christ.
